Putting the “Dash” in “Dashboards”

Data into Visuals

We are all swimming in a sea of information, but we ignore most of it until something “important” attracts our attention. This is especially true in a business.  Developing early warning systems for determining the overall health of the business is a critical step in ensuring long-term success. This is often easier said than done.

One of the mistakes that business owners make is that they often track many unrelated metrics, using difficult to understand, numerical data. This type of system requires a high degree of business expertise. Unfortunately, not everyone in the organization is in a position to understand the business in this way and, as a result, this limits the number of people person who actually understand what is happening, why it is happening, and who it is happening to.

Fortunately, there’s a simple solution.

Managing a business using visual tools such as graphs, gauges, meters, and plots will enable everyone in the organization to share the same view of how things are going. This type of “dashboard” will get everyone in the organization on the same page and will illuminate problems and opportunities. After all of the stake-holders have the same understanding, everyone will be in a better position to improve the business together – with no silos of knowledge, and no special understanding.
